Thanks to the Athboy lady who rescued this Great Crested Grebe from the snow in her garden and from her own dog who found it. Heat and a course of antibiotics restored this bird to health. We released it into the Yellow Ford river at the footbridge in Athboy.
This round-bodied, stump-tailed, long-necked swimming bird is rarely on land and dives frequently. It holds its thin neck upright or withdrawn into its shoulders. It feeds on small fish and other aquatic creatures and is found in lakes and rivers in Ireland and parts of Europe.
